Sycamore Canyon - a modern heirloom wedding venue on Smith Mountain Lake
As a wedding photographer, every new venue feels like diving into a story halfway through. The walls are all set up, but the tales waiting to be told are just beginning. That’s how it felt when I first visited Sycamore Canyon, this fresh wedding venue nestled on 21 acres just outside Hardy, Virginia, and only a stone's throw from Smith Mountain Lake.

What really struck me right off the bat was how Sycamore Canyon feels entirely at ease in its surroundings — confident, grounded, and deeply aware of its place in the world.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Jason Pollard, who, alongside his wife Lori and their family, devoted two years — and a whole lot of love and labor — to bringing this vision to life.
With over 30 years in hospitality and event management — grounded in Virginia and broadened by years along California’s Central Coast, including overseeing special events at a Santa Barbara winery — Jason brings a depth of perspective to Sycamore Canyon. He shaped it not from Pinterest dreams or fleeting trends, but from real-life experience and family heritage. He gets how weddings should flow and feel, which is refreshing.
The Setting: Open Land, Water, and Quiet
Sycamore Canyon wedding venue is beautifully laid out along Grimes Creek, which feeds straight into Smith Mountain Lake. The main barn — a spacious 6,000-square-foot gray-and-white structure — sits about 250 yards from the water, surrounded by long views and gentle hills.
There’s something subtly confident about its exterior. The crisp white siding paired with soft gray barn doors featuring classic cross-bracing gives it an inviting yet understated look. A bold black metal star high on the façade adds character without being flashy. The string lights stretching out from the building hint at evenings under the stars, as the surrounding wooded hills quietly anchor the space in nature.

From my perspective as a photographer, I appreciated the intentional simplicity of the exterior: natural materials blend harmoniously with soft gray tones and white trim. Jason is right to call it a “your own palette” — it's a backdrop that lets all the wedding colors, flowers, fashion choices, and lighting shine through instead of competing with them.
Arrival: From Path to Veranda
Guests start their journey from a spacious parking area and make their way to the venue along a softly lit path lined with Edison lights. The first point of gathering is a large covered veranda that runs alongside the barn.
Underneath beautiful timber beams and warm wood ceilings, café lights hang in neat rows above, while modern ceiling fans keep things breezy during warmer days. Black metal café tables paired with wooden benches invite people to sit down and chat rather than crowd together uncomfortably.

One standout feature of this veranda? An open outdoor kitchen and bar where guests can actually see food being prepared. It’s all about connection here — not just putting on a show. Imagine Santa Maria-style barbecue sizzling away or pasta stations twirling fresh noodles while everyone mingles around fire pits that beckon guests to settle in as night falls.

At this point, you might find those barn doors still shut tight, building excitement as couples finish getting ready inside.
Ceremony Options: Designed Around Light
One thing I really appreciate — especially as someone behind the camera — is Jason's clear obsession with light.
The barn itself is strategically positioned from east to west so that it catches soft morning light moving into beautiful afternoon rays throughout the day. Those big barn doors open wide when needed to let in all that natural light. Both bridal and groom suites come equipped with ample windows that photographers and make-up crews absolutely love—they create perfect lighting without harsh hot spots or nasty shadows.
This focus on light carries right into ceremony design too! They currently offer two outdoor settings: one directly at the front of the barn and another alongside the creek — both harmonizing beautifully with nature.
The main ceremony spot sits beneath that iconic star on the barn entrance — it symbolizes prosperity and good luck after all! When you’re there during ceremony hours (around 4–6 pm), couples bask in gorgeous light without any annoying glare behind them.

The Bell, the Fires, and the Sound of the Place
When I showed up for my visit, Jason was busy mounting this impressive iron bell — one that's set to ring after ceremonies as well as call everyone to dinner later on! His love for iron shines throughout; you’ll see wrought iron details woven throughout every corner of this venue.
Fire pits are integrated right into concrete patios where guests can gather around comfortably, while Adirondack chairs invite relaxation as temperatures dip at nightfall.
Later on during our tour, Jason encouraged me to pause for a moment just to listen.
“You hear the creek,” he said thoughtfully. “Then come the birds... and eventually it just gets super quiet.”
As dusk settles in, sounds become part of what makes this place special: water flowing gently nearby mixed with distant owl calls or maybe even coyotes howling somewhere far off – nature sounds layered with laughter and music.
“That’s kind of what we’re going for here,” he concluded.
Inside the Barn: Clean Lines, Softening Layers
Once those grand barn doors swing open wide, finally welcoming guests inside, the main hall awaits them—a space that strikes an elegant balance between Scandinavian simplicity mixed with cozy Americana warmth.
High ceilings unveil exposed wooden trusses overhead; their rich hues add rhythm & texture against clean white vertical walls below, while polished concrete floors reflect light, giving off airy gallery vibes.

Those iconic barn doors themselves—white cross-bracing over soft gray panels—become defining features architecturally; not just functional but visually striking too!
Instead of generic rentals filling the space haphazardly, Jason and Lori thoughtfully furnished the venue with cherished family heirloom pieces — creating a look that feels collected rather than overly styled.
Suspended center stage within this hall lies their emblematic Sycamore tree—a stunning six-foot metal piece weighing nearly 300 pounds; aligned perfectly between those grand entrances, reinforcing feelings rooted deep down here despite any modern touches around them!
Even when the room is empty, it feels ceremonial.
The Bridal Suite: Designed by Someone Who’s Been There
The bridal suite is light-filled, spacious, and intentionally calm. Soft gray walls, crisp white trim, and polished concrete floors reflect natural light from large windows dressed in simple white blinds — ideal for both makeup and photography.

What gives the room its soul is the quiet integration of heritage. A repurposed antique sewing machine base supports a sleek white vanity that blends aged metalwork with modern function. A small upholstered couch with turned wooden legs continues that dialogue between past and present.

And one detail I found incredibly thoughtful: the walls remain intentionally clean, keeping the space visually calm, while rolling garment racks manage the wardrobe with ease. There are just a few strategically placed garment hooks — practical additions that won’t interrupt the room’s simplicity.
For photographers like myself frequently walking into bridal chaos—think scattered clothing items and multicolored drink containers amidst hair/makeup prep—this choice feels downright brilliant! Everything can easily be rolled away into the adjacent bathroom, resetting the space back again for capturing those meaningful moments perfectly!
The Gentleman’s Room: History on the Walls
Onward now towards the groom’s suite, known affectionately as “the gentleman's room”—where Sycamore Canyon truly showcases its unique heritage!
Walls proudly display framed portraits, aviation certificates, and military documents arranged artistically, resembling galleries showcasing rich stories behind each artifact—these aren’t simply decorative antiques—they breathe life, telling tales passed down generations!

One particular framed piece caught my eye—a plug from Pollard Pools representing a business run by none other than Jason's grandfather—a subtle nod towards work, craft, and continuity across time periods symbolizing family legacies.
“This is where you raise your glass honoring ancestors,” says Jason. And standing there, surrounded by their stories on the walls, it truly feels like exactly that.
History, Heritage, and the Name “Sycamore Canyon”
The name Sycamore Canyon comes from California — specifically the canyon near Big Sur where Jason’s grandmother was raised. Before they met, his grandfather was serving as a World War II naval aviator, ferrying planes across the world and later building a life defined by resilience, craftsmanship, and connection.
That legacy is echoed throughout the venue, most clearly in the sycamore tree itself — rendered in metal, suspended from the trusses, and quietly anchoring the space. Designed by Jason’s daughter, McKinley, the emblem becomes more than a logo; it’s a generational thread woven directly into the structure.
This is where the venue’s style becomes clear: modern minimalism layered with heritage Americana. Clean lines meet biographical design. Not nostalgia — intention.

Comfort, Capacity, and Practical Details
From an amenities standpoint, Sycamore Canyon is impressively outfitted considering how new they are:
Capacity reaching upwards towards 275 guests
ADA-compliant access provided throughout entire property
Climate-controlled rooms offering individual controls
Dedicated vendor areas complete with secure storage spaces
Full backup generator (“The show must go on!”)
Separate vendor loading access accompanied by concrete pathways
Sparkler exits allowed adding extra magic moments captured!
Friday-Sunday wedding access readily available
Micro-weddings and elopements happening on weekdays!
Ample parking spaces accommodating 75 cars plus a separate discreet VIP lot dedicated solely to a wedding party
AND this parking is connected directly to private entrances leading to the bridal and groom suites, respectively. So that the guests won’t see the couple before the ceremony.
Every transition feels considered. Every logistical choice reflects someone who has spent decades watching events succeed — or struggle.
A Photographer’s Closing Thought
What excites me most about Sycamore Canyon isn’t just what it is — it’s what it’s becoming.
This is a venue with space to grow, both physically and creatively. A place rooted in history, but not stuck in it. A modern heirloom, waiting for stories to unfold.
The outdoor kitchen on the veranda will soon welcome two handmade wooden pizza ovens — adding another layer of warmth and gathering energy to evenings under the string lights.
A small wooden chapel is planned for the woods, offering an intimate setting for quiet ceremonies or reflection. Up on the hill, a raised deck will create a simple place to sit and take in the view over the valley and the barn below. Not ornate. Not staged. Just a place to pause.
Discreet screens are also planned along the hill to soften views of parking areas, preserving the feeling of being surrounded by countryside rather than infrastructure.
Inside the barn, permanent drapery, uplighting, and market lighting are in development. The ceilings are already striking; these additions will simply add warmth and dimension while honoring the clean architectural lines that define the space.
And yes — a black wrought-iron spiral staircase is coming. It will introduce vertical movement to the interior and open up entirely new photographic perspectives. I can’t wait to see the gorgeous images it will inspire!
When the trees fill in, the grass turns bright green, the lights glow at dusk, and laughter carries across the creek, this place will feel exactly as it was intended to feel.
Unforced. Grounded. Alive.
